Best friends Josh (Derek Richardson) and Paxton (Jay Hernandez) plan to spend the summer after graduating college on an all out backpacking trip across Europe. Stopping in Amsterdam to increase his taste for drugs and sex, they meet Ollie (Ithor Gudjonsson), a like-minded traveler from Iceland.
When the three bachelors depart to research seductive rumors by the breathtaking women of a Slovakia hostel during a town inhabited, they find themselves unwittingly involved in a deadly game.
The film is about human modernization and Darwinian economics. The Americans depicted want more than a painting or a statue from a trip to Europe – they want stories of subordinate natives. But his fraternal lust is outclassed by the international business community (all First World players) who want to experience first-hand murder.
Sex is just a foreplay that turns into an erotically charged bloodbath. The film works on many levels – first as an aggressive, homo-social “big picture”, then as a first-rate slasher, and finally as unbridled capitalism. I cannot believe that this film has received a tepid review from anyone (at least dare to hate it completely). strongly recommended.
Many comments concern themselves with the notion that is somehow an attack on European values. National Socialism was about the restrictiveness of evil – everyday people were expected to do what they thought. Here we have both American and European social conventions that have been culturally determined for centuries: hunting and buying fu * king and immunity.
If you can’t handle it, or find it ugly, then you probably don’t want to watch “horror” movies. The horror in this film is all human, emanating from within – no superkosmos or grand-curious. It is about those who have forgotten that they are human (hyper-abandoned), and at least Roth has the good grace to take it in a loving and enthusiastic way. I say again, the film is more subversive (and technically beautiful) in the way it is being credited for.
