Nine noble families fight for control of the mythical land of Westeros. Political and sexual intrigue is pervasive. Robert Baratheon, King of Westeros, asks his old friend Eddard, Lord Stark, to serve as Hand of the King, or highest official.
Secretly warned that the previous Hand was assassinated, Eddard accepts in order of business to investigate further. Meanwhile, the Queen’s family, the Lannisters, may be hatching a plot to take power. Across the sea, the last members of the previous and deposed ruling family, the Targaryens, are also scheming to regain the throne.
The friction between the houses Stark, Lannister, Baratheon and Targaryen and with the remaining great houses Greyjoy, Tully, Arryn, Tyrell and Martell leads to full-scale war. All while a very ancient evil awakens in the farthest north. Amidst the war and political confusion, a neglected military order of misfits, the Night’s Watch, is all that stands between the realms of men and icy horrors beyond.
The first 5 seasons of Game of Thrones are extraordinary, a beautifully structured series. Set, Characters, Pacing, Twist – Extraordinary. However, I could not fault it, but things collapsed after that.
When it came to season 5, the author of the books (George R. R. Martin) and HBO differed. Martin wanted the show to move on to more series, allowing all his complex story to grow at a natural pace and move forward. HBO refused and so they left the project, which is very clear.
Seasons 6 and 7, although flawed, were still available. The books and George’s previous comments paved the way for both seasons, but you can feel that the episode lacked substance.
This brings us to the latest season, and expectations were high after 2 years of waiting. The first two episodes were very plain, the reunions were amazing, although you could tell that they were setting up for one of the biggest fights of the series, which was very predictable since Season 1. I tried not to have too many expectations, although the director referred to episode 3 as “bigger than Helms Deep”, a comment that would always spread excitement.
Episode 3 was so disappointing, by all means. If you were somehow able to see in the dark (what the director was thinking?) You would break the poor decisions made by the writers. I wouldn’t pay too much attention to it, but originally Dan & Dave opted to go the Hollywood route, disregarding any real story or strategy. Episode 4 was equally disappointing, which I hoped would redeem the final season.
The writers ruin this final season by fast tracking characters (basically teleporting), making the characters smartest, and protecting the plot armor as the ‘favorite’. I am still going to watch till the end, but I felt that I would warn any future viewer to prepare myself, because there is nothing more heartbreaking than watching terrible writing because it is a tremendous series.
