Ever since the tragedy of her short-lived life as a superhero ended, Jessica Jones has been recreating her personal life and career as a hot-tempered, sardonic private detective in Hell’s Kitchen, New York City. Plagued by a rogue case of self-loathing and PTSD, Jessica fights monsters from within and outside, using her extraordinary abilities as an unlikely champion for those in need. Especially if they are ready to cut her check.
This review pained me in writing, because I really think that season 1 was the pinnacle of serial television. It had amazing plotting, a satisfying ending, a terrible villain, characters that I loved, nothing, exquisite, beautiful cinematography and tone. It fulfilled its every promise.
I could not wait for season 2. And those two years were tough. I wish it had finally arrived. I knew that it was a difficult task to follow and so I made a concerted effort to judge it on the basis of my ability and not dismiss it so that I could survive and achieve the impossible first.
What went wrong Plotting: With little focus everywhere. A terrible villain? Try a villain. Character that I love? Yes, but both leads are kept apart from each other for some or the other odd reason. Nothing spectacular? Carrie Ann Moss and her entire sub-plot were boring and irrelevant.
Jessica’s rival PI was a flat plot device. A satisfactory ending? I don’t know, I couldn’t get past episode 8. It was putting me to sleep. There was beautiful cinematography and tone / atmosphere throughout this season, but if the writing is dull then I don’t mean anything. Nutmeg can make good egg flour great, but it is not tasty when eaten on its own.
I think the biggest problem with season 2 is that it fails to deliver on Jessica Jones’ major promise: it’s a sci-fi super-hero show about a tortured loner who doesn’t become a superhero. Wants, but no one — less, forced to fight the super-villain because they are threatening him and the people he loves.
In other words, Season 2 was Jurassic Park without dinosaurs.
I’m giving the show a 5. A perfect 10 for the first season, and a 0 for the second.
